About Sharon Schönteich

Dr. Schönteich is a Licensed Psychology Associate in the District of Columbia and a post-doctoral resident in Virginia. She is equipped with extensive training and experience in evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, traumatic stress, social anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also treats mood disorders, adjustment to life stressors, and emotion regulation disorders. Dr. Schönteich has a specialized interest in the treatment of symptoms related to infertility, fertility loss, and the perinatal and postpartum periods. Dr. Schönteich completed her dissertation on First-time mothers’ experiences of motherhood after infertility and in-vitro fertilization. She recently published a book, Struggling with Infertility

Dr. Schönteich is solutions— and strength-focused, collaborative, and engaging. She aims to tactfully build a solid therapeutic alliance to allow for curiosity, openness, and trust. Therapy focuses on goals that foster wellness and improved health. Her clinical style is compassionate, allowing room for exploration and gentle challenge when appropriate.

Dr. Schönteich received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University, Santa Barbara, CA (APA-accredited). She completed her clinical internship at the District of Columbia Superior Court, Child Guidance Clinic, and a year-long group therapy rotation based on the Tavistock Model at Howard University Counseling Center.

Dr. Schönteich has worked in forensic settings in NYC and DC, public school systems, private practice primarily working with children and families, and a community mental health program.

Dr. Schönteich is originally from South Africa and has insight into immigration and expatriate life. Before immigrating to the United States of America, her first career was in organizational development and training. While in South Africa, she worked in a large governmental IT agency, a global manufacturing company, a “Big Five” consulting firm, and a world-recognized Graduate School of Business. She also engaged in competitive swimming at provincial and national levels.
