About Lisa Bateman

Dr. Bateman is a clinical psychologist who specializes in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), social anxiety, phobias, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), stress, depression, body dysmorphia, and eating disorders. Dr. Bateman also specializes in providing Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for body-focused repetitive behaviors (e.g., excoriation, trichotillomania) and Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) for tic disorders (e.g., Tourette Syndrome, transient tic disorder). Dr. Bateman has experience in providing individual, group, and family therapy in a variety of settings, as well as experience working with all ages, from young children to older adults. Her unique experiences working in both school and clinical settings have equipped her to be able to provide specialized clinical treatment with children and adolescents while also collaborating with schools when applicable to assist clients in reaching their goals.

Dr. Bateman received her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Florida in 2014. She completed a pre-doctoral internship in which she provided academic, behavioral, and mental health interventions in a clinical setting as well as in elementary, middle, and high schools. During this time, she also became a certified provider of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a behavioral parent training with a strong evidence-based for young children with externalizing behaviors (e.g., Oppositional Defiant Disorder [ODD], ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders [ASD]), as well as a certified instructor of behavioral parent training courses. After completing her Ph.D., she completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Rothman Center for Neuropsychiatry at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, in which she acquired specialized training the treatment of OCD and other anxiety disorders in children, adolescents, and adults using CBT with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). After completing her postdoctoral fellowship in 2016, Dr. Bateman began working in an outpatient clinical psychology practice called NeuroScience, Inc. in Herdon, VA. Dr. Bateman spent almost three years at NeuroScience, Inc. providing CBT with ERP to children, adolescents, and adults with OCD and other anxiety disorders.

Dr. Bateman believes in providing treatment that has both empirical and clinical support for its effectiveness, but she also works with clients to tailor a treatment plan to specific to their goals. She works with clients to establish rapport, identify goals for treatment, identify and challenge cognitions that stand in the way of success, and collaborate to develop a plan to change behaviors towards achieving goals. As symptoms often affect the whole family, Dr. Bateman also works with family members (e.g., parents, spouses, siblings) as appropriate and permitted by clients to help loved ones learn strategies for supporting clients in achieving their goals. Dr. Bateman provides treatment in the office as well as in other environments (e.g., home visit, off site) when in-vivo practice of skills is beneficial for change and success.
Dr. Bateman took a particular interest in “Positive Psychology” during her graduate training and maintains an approach in treatment that is focused on recognizing and building upon strengths and utilizing positive reinforcement for engagement in treatment and accomplishment of goals. Dr. Bateman understands that therapy, especially ERP, is effective yet arduous, and she works with clients to build and maintain motivation to persevere with the challenging task of overcoming anxiety.
