About Kristin Zauel

Dr. Zauel is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) with the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). She received her Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from the APA-accredited Clinical Psychology Program at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she conducted research examining the causal factors of eating disorders and body dissatisfaction.

Dr. Zauel completed her predoctoral internship at The Children’s Hospital in Denver where she worked within the eating disorder program, providing psychotherapy to individuals and families struggling with eating disorders within an inpatient, day-treatment, and outpatient level of care. She completed her postdoctoral residency at the Warm Springs Counseling Center and Training Institute in Boise, Idaho.

Since 2000, Dr. Zauel has worked within a variety of settings (outpatient private practice, residential treatment, and college counseling center) providing individual, family and group psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. She is passionate about supporting clients in furthering their well-being and living a life more fully aligned with their values. Dr. Zauel’s approach relies heavily on evidence-based treatments such as ACT, CBT, and family-based treatment, while also integrating elements of compassion focused therapy and a strengths-based approach. Overall, she believes that the most important element of therapy may be the relationship between client and therapist, and she strives to maintain a strong, trusting relationship while utilizing best practices in treatment.

In addition to direct service with clients, Dr. Zauel has also been committed to assisting and supporting new professionals in the field of psychology. She provides ongoing supervision and mentorship to multiple pre-doctoral externs and interns each year, as well as leading seminars for psychology graduate students on ACT principles and treatment of clients with body image or eating disorder concerns.

Dr. Zauel was previously a staff psychologist at the Counseling Center at the Catholic University of America. She provided psychotherapy to students with a variety of mental health concerns, led psychotherapy groups focused on Mindfulness and body positivity, and served on the Eating Assessment Team within the University.
