About Abby Brown

Dr. Brown is a clinical psychologist available to work with clients aged 17 and above.

Dr. Brown specializes in working with adults with eating disorders and disordered eating, and the conditions that often co-occur with eating concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, personality disorders, and trauma. Dr. Brown also has an extensive research background in chronic fatigue syndrome (sometimes called myalgic encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS) and has worked on multiple NIH-funded studies; she is aware of the unique challenges faced by individuals living with ME/CFS and other poorly understood, stigmatized health conditions.

Dr. Brown has experience providing individual, group, and family therapy in a variety of settings including eating disorder residential and day programs, university counseling centers, and community mental health centers. Dr. Brown is a trained community psychologist with a strong commitment to social justice, to working with those whose identities have been marginalized, and to understanding the impact of cultural and social context on individual mental health concerns.

Dr. Brown believes that establishing a collaborative, safe, and trusting relationship with her clients is the foundation of any effective therapy. She provides evidence-based interventions that are tailored to her client’s needs and progress. In therapy, clients will learn new skills and strategies for coping with life’s demands and will gain insight into what contributes to and maintains unfulfilling behavioral, emotional, and relational patterns. The goal of therapy is to help find a life worth living and being present in.

Dr. Brown received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical-Community Psychology from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked at the following sites:

  • Eating Recovery Center – Eating Disorder Residential & Day Programs, Chicago, IL
  • University of Michigan – Counseling and Psychological Services, Ann Arbor, MI
  • University of Chicago – Student Counseling Service, Chicago, IL
  • Center for Community Research, Chicago, IL
